The WTO 4th Trade Policy Review of Sri Lanka concludes successfully

 

The Fourth Trade Policy Review of Sri Lanka was successfully concluded on 3rd November 2016 at the World Trade Organization in Geneva after two days deliberations.

 

WTO, as the successor to GATT, currently consists of 164 Member countries. The representatives who participated at the Trade Policy Review meeting have shown great enthusiasm on trade and economic policy developments in  Sri Lanka.

There was a general consensus on the healthy and robust economic performance of Sri Lanka, showing an average growth rate of 6% during the period of the Trade Policy Review (2010 to 2015) and the GDP per capita growth have exceeded 25%.

 

The country was congratulated for maintaining lower rate of inflation and unemployment. The salutary developments have taken place amidst external global financial upheavals as well as domestic constraints.


Delegates have noted ratification of two WTO important instruments on international obligation viz. the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement and the WIPO Marrakesh VIP Treaty.


At the concluding meeting the delegates particularly, from the EU and the USA congratulated Sri Lanka for successful conclusion of its fourth trade policy review at the WTO.  The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Hon. Rishad Bathuideen, Minister of Industry and Commerce facilitated by R.D.S. Kumararatne, Ambassador/PR to the WTO, Sonali Wijeratne, Director General of Commerce of the Department of Commerce, K.A Vimalenthirajah, Director/Department of Trade and Investment Policy of the Ministry of Finance, T.A.L. Weerasinghe, Director of Customs, H.M.S. Premarathna, Director of Customs, Y. M. Indraratne, Additional Director (ERD) of Central Bank of Sri Lanka,  C. P. Malalgoda, Executive Director (Research and Policy Advocacy) of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, Mr. Samantha Wijesekara, Deputy Director of Commerce of the Department of Commerce and Mr. Nalinda Wijerathna, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the WTO in Geneva.
